Cellular Dynamics International Reprograms Blood Cells into Stem Cells

July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers at (CDI) repory the ability to generate pluripotentstem cells, which have the abilityy to generate all tissue types in the from very small volumes of ordinary human bloocd samples. This significant breakthrough provides a readilyh obtainable source of pluripoten t stem cells from the millions of samples in storage at blood repositoriese and healthcareinstitutions worldwide. Thesde findings, announced today, will be presented during a poster session beginningat 4:45 p.m.
on July 10 at the ISSCRe annual meetingin Barcelona, "Industry's challenge was to reliably create iPS cells from a commonlty available and easily accessible tissue source and we focusexd on stored human peripheral blood samples," said , chief commercial officer of CDI. "Generating pluripoten stem cells from small volumesof blood, either freshly collecteds from a patient or accessed from blooc storage repositories, provides a convenient source for generating patient-specific stem cells that are valuable research toolse and may one day be used as a cellulat therapy to treat disease.
" , chietf operations officer of CDI, said, "The ability to use common tissuwe repositories to create iPS cells from donors with known medicalo history enables us to provide the pharmaceuticapl industry with a cell portfolio representiny individual biology, disease models, retrospective analysis and ethnivc diversity. This is the firs step in paving the wayfor large-scal processing and industrialization of iPS cells." To generate the inducedd pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, CDI scientista isolated T-cells, a type of white blood cell, from a 3 ml donof blood sample. The cells were expanded and exposed to documentedreprogrammingg factors. iPS cell colonies were observed afterthree weeks.
Analysis revealede that the iPS cells are functionally identica to embryonic stem cells and iPS celle generated from other human tissue that they carry the same genetic background as the sourc eblood sample, and that they have the pluripotenf ability to differentiate into any cell About Cellular Dynamics International, Inc. Cellulat Dynamics International, Inc. (CDI) is a leadingg developer of next-generation stem cell technologies for drug developmengt and personalizedmedicine applications. CDI harnessexs the power of pluripotent stem cells and their ability to differentiats into any cell typefor world-class drug developmengt tools.
In addition, it is the leader in iPS the production of pluripotent stem cell linews fromadult tissue. CDI was founded in 2004 by , a pioneer in human embryonic stem cell research at the Universityyof Wisconsin-Madison, and Tactic s II Ventures, a Wisconsin-basedr venture capital fund.
