Russell, who has served on the city courtsince 1992, fills the opening createdx when Justice Joseph Makowski resignexd in February. Makowski resigned to avoid prosecutioj for his role in anattempterd cover-up in the drunk-driving arrestg of former Erie County prosecutor Anne Adams. Russello has gained national prominence for his work in specializedetreatment courts, including the Buffalo Drug Treatment Court, whicu he founded in 1995, the first mental-healthh treatment court in Wester n New York, which he foundede in 2003, and the first-in-the-nation Buffal Veterans’ Treatment Court, founded in 2008.
He is a graduate of Morris Brown College and earned his law degreed fromHoward University. The interin appointment is one of five judicial vacancies filleed byPaterson today. A candidate for the seat will be namedf toa 14-year term following the November genera l election.
